Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel ruled out with knee injury

Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel is expected to be out for between six and nine months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Van Ginkel, a £8.4m summer signing from Vitesse Arnhem, suffered the knee injury during the Capital One Cup win over Swindon Town.

The 20-year-old - making only his second Chelsea start following his summer move - went down after a challenge from Alex Pritchard and hobbled off the pitch in the 10th minute.

Van Ginkel, whose season looks to be over, joined Chelsea on a five-year contract from Vitesse after coming through the Dutch club's youth system.

The injury severely hampers the midfielder's chances of making Holland's World Cup squad - he made his international debut last November and was expected to challenge for a place in Louis van Gaal's squad for Brazil.
